NVIDIA 177.13 Drivers Out?

June 24, 2008

This is a bit strange. Available via HTTP, but not up on the FTP site are the new 177.13 drivers.

Furthermore, for some reason I can’t install these drivers. It’s the first time the installation has failed for me (and I’ve done this at least a half-dozen times). Read the rest of this entry »

Deluge BitTorrent Problem…and fix!

June 21, 2008

I like to use Deluge as my BitTorrent client - it’s got an interface I can easily understand (much like uTorrent, which I used to use back in my Windows days), and the developers seem to really understand the concept of what a bittorent client should do.

However, there is one problem I keep running into with Deluge. If you don’t shut it down properly - say you restart X with a CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE - then when you try to re-start deluge you might get an error like this:

….
terminate called after throwing an instance of ‘asio::system_error’
what(): Address already in use

Updates borked: Evolution gone

June 12, 2008

Today I had some updates waiting, and as is my want, I began the installation. This time, however there was an error message of some sort about not being able to do a complete update. (I did not write down the error at the time, as I was in a bit of a rush).

I briefly noticed that among the packages removed was Evolution and some related packages, but I continued anyway… Read the rest of this entry »

Penny Arcade Game

June 10, 2008

From time to time I will check out Penny Arcade, and I remembered that they had a video game coming out.

Today, I was pleased to find out they have a native linux version of On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode One! There is a demo available, so I gave it a download to try it out. Read the rest of this entry »

Recording in Ubuntu, Pt 2. - Problems in Ardour

June 6, 2008

As I continue working with this song project, I’m learning more about how to produce audio in Linux. I was going to talk more about the overall procedure, but sad to say I’ve ran into enough problems with Ardour that I have to blog about them.

I’m not giving up yet - overall Ardour is still on the positive side of the ledger. However, there are some real issues I’ve ran into recently: Read the rest of this entry »

Linksys WRT300N v1 and dd-WRT v24 firmware

June 4, 2008

This isn’t really directly related to Ubuntu, but I tried to install the latest dd-WRT firmware (v24) on my Linksys WRT300N (v1) router last week. Read the rest of this entry »

Recording in Ubuntu, Part 1

June 2, 2008

My band is in “pre-pro” (preproduction) for our new CD (hopefully) - and I am demoing up one of the tracks to show to the appropriate bigwigs.

Last time around, we all used Cakewalk Sonar and related Windows tools for this, but this time around I am sticking with Ardour / Hydrogen / Rosegarden. Not only does this have to work for me, but I also have to convince the other band members that I’m not just being ornery by refusing to use Sonar. Read the rest of this entry »

NVIDIA 173.14.05 Drivers Out

May 30, 2008

(32-bit | 64-bit)

These came out a couple of days ago, but I just got them installed today. So far everything seems fine - stress testing (”games”) to be performed later!

ubuntustudio-look ate my babies!

May 29, 2008

I haven’t been blogging too much lately because I have been doing a lot of recording and so I haven’t been messing about with anything else in Ubuntu.

About a week ago I installed some ubuntustudio packages, one of which was ubuntustudio-look so I could get the theme and images. I noticed at the time that one of the packages it removed as part of the installation was ubuntu-desktop.

I thought that was a little strange, but I figured it was just one of those things I didn’t understand.

Today, however when the updates were pushed out (many of which had to do with open office), it caused a big problem.

I got all kind of update and packaging errors, the first of which indicated that I didn’t have a *-desktop package installed, so the open office updates would not apply.

As I’ve been going through my day I’ve had to remove and add lots of packages myself through Synaptic and apt-get to try to take care of things as they pop up.

I havent’ been writing down the exact steps, but my advice is DO NOT INSTALL ubuntustudio-look. I’m pretty sure it broke something by removing ubuntu-desktop.
