This was a toughie!
I needed to get Ventrilo up and running. This is a voice chat program that is very popular among online gamers. Sadly, there is no Linux client available, so I hoped to get it running in Wine.
The main problem here is that you need to have 2 applications sharing the audio card – the game audio, and the chat program. Here’s how I got it working…

This is harder than I thought
After lots of reading about Ardour and VST, I’ve decided to try to do without VSTs, at least for now. I grabbed the latest (2.2) version of Ardour from getdeb and proceeded to proceed. getdeb is a really cool site that provides ready-to-install packages of the latest versions of lots of packages for Ubuntu. (I think it would be really nice if the default repositories would update packages more frequently, and then show them as updates – that would be a great feature!) Read the rest of this entry »

Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution
One of the things I do from time to time is play in one of them-there rock ‘n roll bands. And, of course, I used various software under WinXP for pre-production and other such musical gyrations. I don’t have a lot of time invested in the WinXP side of the house here, because most of the preproduction was handled by our drummer, so it’s not like I’m throwing away a lot of invested time there. Also, the real studio uses ProTools, of course, so we always had to export/import real audio tracks when bringing in pre-production stuff anyway.
I’d like to get my home studio back up and working in Ubuntu, and the first thing to get happening is my external sound card, a Edirol UA-25 USB Audio Interface – it’s cheap (as these things go) and the sound quality is good. Let’s get that working first. Read the rest of this entry »
