One of the things I did was to replace GDM with SLiM as my login manager. It seems to mostly work fine, but today I tried to start up Jack (via qjackctl), and I kept getting this error:
cannot use real-time scheduling (FIFO at priority 10) [for thread SOMENUBER, from thread SOMENUMBER] (1: Operation not permitted)
cannot create engine

As I continue working with this song project, I’m learning more about how to produce audio in Linux. I was going to talk more about the overall procedure, but sad to say I’ve ran into enough problems with Ardour that I have to blog about them.

This is harder than I thought
After lots of reading about Ardour and VST, I’ve decided to try to do without VSTs, at least for now. I grabbed the latest (2.2) version of Ardour from getdeb and proceeded to proceed. getdeb is a really cool site that provides ready-to-install packages of the latest versions of lots of packages for Ubuntu. (I think it would be really nice if the default repositories would update packages more frequently, and then show them as updates – that would be a great feature!) Read the rest of this entry »
