If you are on a working Hardy, my recommendation is do not upgrade yet. Too many bugs; wait a while and hope they are fixed.

So I decided to update two machines to the new release of Ubuntu (8.10, Intrepid Ibex) today. One is a laptop that I have been running Kubuntu with KDE 4 on and is my tote-around machine. The other is my main desktop on which I am mostly running Xubuntu (but am considering changing).

One of the things I did was to replace GDM with SLiM as my login manager. It seems to mostly work fine, but today I tried to start up Jack (via qjackctl), and I kept getting this error:
cannot use real-time scheduling (FIFO at priority 10) [for thread SOMENUBER, from thread SOMENUMBER] (1: Operation not permitted) cannot create engine

One thing I finally got working was the ability to show background image of the earth on my desktop that would update during the day.

Well, I gave KDE a whirl, but it’s not ready for me yet, so I thought I might try out XFCE.
This is partially about trying out other desktop environments, and partially trying to get away from GNOME, so there’s a little of both in this entry…
